Two Worlds Unite
Then Sally Shamrell reported the news for KVOA-TV and Glenn Murphy owned the Backstage restaurant, they had no idea a world-wide courtship would lead them back to Tucson where they would become Mr. and Mrs. Murphy.
The pair first met in 2000, but Glenn soon moved back to his native Australia. As fate would have it, they reconnected and decided to marry in 2008 after a globe trotting, fun-loving courtship. Although there were many places the couple had seen, they agreed to tie the knot in Sally’s native Arizona. They fell in love with the Skyline Country Club, with a view that made them feel like they were on top of the world.
Sally and Glenn’s dual loves of great food and travel were brought together in their wedding celebration, which included a feast that pleased the palates of the Aussies as well as the Americans in attendance. During the cocktail hour, appetizers included kangaroo filet, and bite-sized tequila-lime quail pieces to savor. When the newlyweds joined their guests for dinner, they were treated to New Zealand lamb and filet mignon served Brazilian barbeque style on long skewers. The flames extended to the entertainment, which featured a fire baton show, a tribute to the bride’s college years as a U of A baton twirler.
The ballroom was decorated with a nod to travel, with table assignments printed on “luggage tags” displayed on a world map. Dining tables featured centerpieces fashioned of tall vases blooming on top with a surprise inside--live fish. The tables themselves were named for wildlife photos taken by the bride and groom during their courtship, such as the “Sleepy Koala” and the “Breaching Whale.”
As the evening’s toasts began, the pair unveiled oversized champagne glasses, which were a tremendous hit! In recognition of their good fortune in finding each other, Sally and Glenn gave their guests customized fortune cookies bearing the words, “Here’s to a lifetime of bliss . . . sealed with a promise and a kiss!”
