Lucky in Love

When Ashley Campbell and Evan Scott married last August, the word that best described their experience was “lucky.”

Lucky that the pair, she in Vermont for Law School and he in California in the Marine Corps, found the enchanting Stillwell House and Gardens on short notice for their wedding. Lucky that, although the bride’s friends were “scattered far and wide,” dear friends were able to witness the nuptials and celebrate with the couple.

Considering the distance and time that played a factor in their courtship, Ashley and Evan were definitely lucky that their relationship persevered over the years. As she explains, “We met at a mutual friend’s Christmas party in Tucson. She introduced us several years ago and we dated for a brief period then would only see each other at Christmas.” At the time of their meeting, Ashley was attending undergrad in Ohio while Evan was in Tucson. Eventually, however, the distance grew to a bicoastal relationship when Evan moved to San Diego and Ashley went to Vermont.

Even with the obstacles they faced, the pair fell in love and put together a beautiful wedding with dear friends and family in attendance. The green, white and black color scheme seemed to echo the renewal of the wedding’s sentiment.

Their families played a tremendous role in planning their Tucson wedding, since the engaged couple were living thousands of miles apart when they wed. From tasting menus, hosting the rehearsal dinner and even assembling the reception centerpieces, their parents were instrumental in pulling together the wedding. Says Ashley, “Without them there we would not have gotten everything done because I only had 2 weeks in Tucson between trimesters in classes to plan the wedding and then I took an extra long weekend to try on my dress for a fitting.”

Regardless of the short timeframe, the pair celebrated in classic style with unique eucalyptus, grapes, green apples and limes as part of their decorating scheme. Following a delicious prickly pear barbeque chicken dinner, guests were treated to a sensational chocolate cake adorned with kiwi and green grapes.

One of their favorite songs during their long distance relationship was, not surprisingly, “Lucky” by Jason Mraz and Colbie Callait. It eventually became the song they first danced to as husband and wife.
