Love for each other and a love of country were both expressed profoundly at the June wedding of Kristy Barrett and Michael Aragon.
Kristy, a schoolteacher originally from Canada, and Michael, recently commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy, chose to celebrate their reception at the Mountain View Country Club.
“It was so exciting for us to be able to have a military wedding full of traditions,” recalls the bride, who dressed her attendants in patriotic red. The groomsmen were dashing in their dress whites and marine blues. Even the weather contributed to the theme, by showing off a bright blue sky replete with soft white clouds.
Three hundred people joined Kristy and Michael at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, including more than fifty of Miss Barrett’s middle school students. The students’ gift to their teacher was their presentation of one of the bride’s favorite childhood songs.
Once the couple was pronounced husband and wife, the pair crossed under a sword arch and Kristy was welcomed to the Navy in traditional style . . . “Welcome to the Navy, Mrs. Aragon!”
The reception got off to a spectacular start with entertaining introductions of the bridal party. “Some had choreography, others had props like Razor scooters, and one bridesmaid was swept off her feet by her fiancé (and groomsman) to the theme song of ‘An Officer and a Gentleman,’” recalls Kristy. The evening continued in lighthearted fashion, with toasts from the guests ranging from hysterical to emotional.
In keeping with Navy tradition, the pair cut their wedding cake with Michael’s sword. Poignant moments were found in the celebration as well. Among them were the father-daughter and mother-son dances, which led into an evening of exhilaration and laughter.
“As we drove off after the reception was over, the day was truly a blessing from God,” says the bride. “We are truly blessed to have each other, and our friends and family that support our love.”
