Though they became engaged in elegant Paris, bride Sara Nixon-Kirschner says, “We are not fancy people.” In spite of that, or maybe because of it, Sara and her husband-to-be Cullen Fisher set about making their wedding not only fancy but “an enormous party with everyone we loved.”
The momentum for this “fun, modern and stylish” celebration began soon after the Paris proposal. Save-the-date cards calling friends and family to Tucson for the May, 2009 nuptials set the wheels in motion for the party to end all parties.
While Sara chose a very traditional gown, her bridesmaids wore complimentary light blue gowns paired with sassy red shoes. The men were “tuxedo’ed up” with blue vests and ties, and red rose boutonnieres to tie in with the groom’s red vest and tie. A proliferation of red roses brought the color scheme together, while hinting at the festive evening ahead.
The ceremony took place outdoors at The Westward Look Resort, in a unique setting. “We stood in the middle of a circle of roses which our guests had placed upon arriving: a brilliant idea from wedding planner Anne Bryan,” recalls Sara. The ceremony was officiated by the groom’s aunt, who “wrote a stunningly beautiful non-denominational service with our poignant, personal vows as the centerpiece.”
Once pronounced husband and wife, fun and frivolity took over. The wedding party was introduced in fun-loving style, and the guests enjoyed a band that “expertly played the best party songs of the last 80 years.”
The ballroom was decorated with a vintage Spanish flair, featuring red and white lighting and blue accents. Tables set with red votive candles and red roses in full bloom increased the sensational setting. The table names, ranging from “phenomenal” to “amazing” offered some impromptu dance-off props later in the evening.
As an alternative to a wedding cake, the couple served hundreds of cupcakes for their guests. One of Cullen and Sara’s favorite details was the photobooth, which allowed the guests to ham it up and take home a memory from the celebration.
