Heart and Soul

Honoring traditions passed through the generations was important to Adriana Barillari and Adolfo Martinez as they planned their May wedding in Tucson.

The pair celebrated with a Catholic Mass at the historic St. Augustine Cathedral, which incorporated both Italian and Mexican customs, including readings in both languages. “The mass and traditions were most important to us for our wedding,” says the bride, who explains, “Traditions included the lighting of the unity candle, the gold ‘aras’ (coins passed down from the groom’s family), presentation of flowers to the Virgin Mary and the lasso.”

The couple and their guests gathered at the Mountain View Country Club for their reception. The Santa Catalina mountains provided a picturesque backdrop for the outdoor cocktail hour, which featured live music to get the celebration going. Each guest was personally greeted by the bride and groom as they entered the beautifully decorated ballroom. They were given a special gift, a set of hand-painted coasters from Mexico. Candlelight and elegant strands of twinkling lights in the ballroom lent romance to the setting.

The wedding feast included seven courses, ranging from a tomato bisque to penne pasta and a “surf and turf” duet. When the elaborate meal concluded, the evening’s entertainment began. “The band brought in from Mexico played all night,” says Adriana, “getting the crowd involved with props like balloons, masks, straw hats and games.”

After much dancing and celebrating, the guests were treated to a late-night taco bar and a midnight serenade by a Mariachi band.
