as time goes by
“Somewhere in the back of our
minds, there is this hope that
there is someone in the world for
each one of us to love,” reflects
Dina Lajom, who wed Francis
Balderas in Tucson this October.
Introduced through close friends, the pair began their
courtship in the summer of 2005. Undeterred by a long distance
relationship (Chicago and Tucson), Dina and Francis
began to integrate their lives over this time. “For two years,
we have taken turns traveling back and forth to see each
other,” recalls the bride.
This past January, the couple traveled to the Philippines
where Francis respectfully asked Dina’s mother for her
daughter’s hand in marriage. “This is a Filipino Tradition
called “Pamanhikan” that is held dear by my mother and
family,” explains Dina.
Reflecting on the Filipino traditions embraced by both
families became a hallmark of the couple’s wedding celebration.
Wearing the formal “Barong Tagalog,” the groom was
proudly escorted down the church aisle by his mother and
sister. They were followed by the ring bearer, the coin bearer,
the Bible bearer, six flower girls and a junior bridesmaid, as
well as the groomsmen. The maid of honor led the bride’s
procession. Dressed in a gown of silk shantung purchased in
the Philippines, the bride was escorted down the aisle by her
mother and sister.
The ceremony was enhanced by music performed by the
Tucson Girls Chorus.
Following their exchange of vows, the couple and their
guests celebrated at the Westward Look Resort and Spa.
Guests were treated to a video entitled “Because of You,”
prepared by the newlyweds, which featured images of their
family and friends who played important roles in their lives.
As a remembrance of the event, each guest was given a set
of miniature bamboo wind chimes purchased in the Philippines
especially for the wedding.
