Heart and Soul

Nicole Fredrick and Jesse Glenn chose The Stillwell House & Gardens for a celebration of good health and thankfulness last November.

“We chose the Stillwell House because of the beautiful courtyard,” says Nicole. “It has so much character with the cobblestone and the lights strung all over.” Despite the pair’s early fears that rain might force the celebration inside, they moved ahead with their plans to celebrate outdoors in their dream venue.

The couple’s road to the altar was marked with romance, surprise and more than a little drama that has forged a bond sure to extend into their marriage.

Nicole, a Wisconsin native, met Tucson boy Jesse at a “posh” holiday party that left each of them wanting more of a genuine connection. The self-described “quiet and shy” pair connected that evening, followed by a horse and buggy ride. Recalls Nicole, who was instantly smitten, “That night I knew I had met someone special and I was very excited to see where our future would lead.”

Little did the couple know that their road together would include near-tragedy that would bring them even closer together. A check-up on chest pains revealed a collapsed lung that required surgery and a long recovery for the future groom. Once released from the hospital, Jesse insisted on taking Nicole on a belated Valentine’s Day dinner, followed by a slow walk to look at the city lights—and he made a heartfelt proposal. “He held my hand and asked me if I would stay by his side for the rest of his life,” recalls the bride.

The wedding colors of black and silver offset the lovely greens of the Stillwell House courtyard. Floral displays in warm fall tones were enhanced by small crystals prepared by the bride herself. A very emotional groom met his bride, who teared up herself when the time came to exchange vows.

“In sickness and in health hits close to home with us . . . and with everyone involved. There were many people sniffeling that day, including our groomsmen,” recalls Nicole. Thankfulness and gratitude certainly marked the Thanksgiving weekend celebration. Following a cocktail hour, a gourmet meal was served and then the couple’s 180 guests took to the Cantina for a night of dancing.
