steeped in tradition
Incorporating the traditions of a couple’s family is one of the truly enchanting things about planning a wedding. This was certainly the case when Paul Corr wed Ginger Dobosz this April.
Raised by his mother and Japanese grandmother, the groom sought to highlight his appreciation for Japanese culture. His bride sought to include the features of a traditional American wedding. Their celebration proves that you really can have it all, and beautifully.
“We wanted to combine elements of both cultures to create a unique and memorable event,” says Paul.
The ladies of the wedding party carried parasols decorated with delicate cherry blossoms, while their gowns featured a back bow similar to what is seen on a traditional kimono. The men wore classically elegant tuxedos in the American style.
The couple chose an interesting musical compilation for the wedding procession. “Rather than walking down the aisle to one type of music or the other, we thought it would be awesome to do a collaboration,” recalls the groom. “We found music that featured traditional Japanese instruments with a sophisticated techno mix.”
Following the exchange of vows near the gazebo, the guests moved to the fountain area to celebrate the newlyweds with a cocktail hour, featuring passed hors d’ oeuvres under the soft glow of beautiful paper lanterns. The festive sounds of the Tucson Taiko kai, a local Japanese Taiko drumming group, set the tone for the evening.
A buffet dinner was presented on the back patio of the estate, which was decorated in red, black and white. Table settings included gold chiavari chairs and gold chargers , which were striking against the red and black linens. The couple created their own centerpieces, crafted with Japanese ceramics and chopsticks. A decadent red velvet cake adorned with Japanese cherry blossoms provided a sweet ending to the party.
