love match

A love of tennis brought Korean students Youri Bae and Woo Hyung Lee together across two states. It didn’t take long for the pair to discover that “love” wasn’t merely a tennis score.

While working at the University of Toledo in Ohio, Youri sought to find a tennis partner and a group who would like to play tennis together. While Toledo does not have a strong Korean community, she found that the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor does. The trip, fifty miles in each direction, was no deterrent for Youri, who not only found a tennis partner but a lifelong match.

Before long, Youri and Woo became better acquainted through emails and shared interests, even spending one snowy Valentine’s Day together. Recalls the bride, “I had classes all day and night on that day, but suddenly all classes were cancelled because of high snowfall!” While snow doesn’t provide ideal conditions for tennis, it suited the romance just fine. Youri and Woo were planning

A wedding in a matter of months. When the bride was transferred to a position in Tucson, they decided they would marry there as well.

Since each was far from home, they gathered an intimate number of family and friends and hosted a lovely traditional church wedding at the Immaculate Heart Novitiate in Tucson. The bride’s family traveled from Korea, while the couple’s close friends came from out of state to take part in the celebration.

The bride prepared many of the wedding’s special touches herself, including helping the florist design her bouquet. “We tried to make our wedding unique in combining Korean and American styles and we loved it,” recalls the bride, who adds, “Our wedding will be an unforgettable memory in our married life.”
